Online inference making and comprehension monitoring in children during reading: Evidence from eye movements

چکیده
Inference generation and comprehension monitoring are essential elements of successful reading comprehension. While both improve with age development, little is known about when how children make inferences monitor their during the process itself. Over two experiments, we monitored eye movements groups (age 8–13 years) as they read short passages answered questions that tapped local (Experiment 1) global 2) inferences. To tap monitoring, contained target words which were consistent or inconsistent context. Comprehension question location was also manipulated appearing before after passage. Children made reading, but evidence less clear for sensitive to inconsistencies relied on an inference, although this seen only very late in movement record. Although had a large effect times, it no one experiment first detrimental other. We conclude appear prioritise efficiency over completeness generating spontaneously necessary establishing coherent representation text.

Focus identification during sentence comprehension: evidence from eye movements.
Three eye movement experiments investigated focus identification during sentence comprehension. Participants read dative or double-object sentences (i.e., either the direct or indirect object occurred first), and a replacive continuation supplied a contrast that was congruous with either the direct or the indirect object. Experiments 1 and 2 manipulated focus by locating only adjacent to either...
متن کاملTracking object location: Evidence from eye movements during event comprehension
If depicted objects visually remain where they are, but are linguistically described as moving to new locations (‘onto the table’), subsequent reference to them directs attention to their new locations. But, do these attentional shifts depend on updated spatial screen coordinates, or new object associations? We investigated situations wherein depicted containers moved between spatial locations ...
متن کاملVowel processing during silent reading: evidence from eye movements.
Two eye movement experiments examined whether skilled readers include vowels in the early phonological representations used in word recognition during silent reading. Target words were presented in sentences preceded by parafoveal previews in which the vowel phoneme was concordant or discordant with the vowel phoneme in the target word. In Experiment 1, the orthographic vowel differed from the ...
متن کاملReading Speed, Comprehension and Eye Movements While Reading Japanese Novels: Evidence from Untrained Readers and Cases of Speed-Reading Trainees
BACKGROUND A growing body of evidence suggests that meditative training enhances perception and cognition. In Japan, the Park-Sasaki method of speed-reading involves organized visual training while forming both a relaxed and concentrated state of mind, as in meditation. The present study examined relationships between reading speed, sentence comprehension, and eye movements while reading short ...
متن کاملThe role of character-based knowledge in online narrative comprehension: evidence from eye movements and ERPs.
Little is known about the on-line evaluation of information relating to well-known story characters during text comprehension. For example, it is not clear in how much detail readers represent character-based information, and the time course over which this information is utilized during on-line language comprehension. We describe an event-related potential (ERP) study (Experiment 1) and an eye...
